The Preserve – Homes in Eden Prairie

Preserve Neighborhood

Preserve Neighborhood

This great Eden Prairie neighborhood is located on the eastern border of Eden Prairie near Hwy 169 and Anderson Lakes Parkway.  Preserve homes in Eden Prairie include 1,693 residential units; among them are  single family homes, town homes, apartments, condominiums, and twin homes.  The Preserve is just minutes from the newly renovated Eden Prairie Mall, 15 minutes to the Mall of America, and 15 minutes to MSP Airport.  I happen to live in the Preserve and one of our favorite things about living here is the ability to walk to Jerry’s Market less than a snowball throw away.  Who doesn’t forget eggs or milk?  With gas prices so high it is very convenient to be able to walk to a grocery store to pick up a few forgotten items.

We also enjoy walking on any of the nearly five miles of trails through out the 185 acres of common property in the Preserve.  I delight at seeing the tennis courts being used heavily in the summer months.  Someday, I’ll get my kids out there to play tennis.

The kids absolutely love the 3/4 acre water surface sand bottom pool!  One of only 11sand bottom pools in the Minnesota, it has a unique filtering system so it feels like you are at the beach but with clean water. The pool complex also includes a diving area, dressing and shower facilities, and picnic area.  The swimming pool opens in early June and closes on Labor Day.  Hours are Monday through Friday 12 noon to 8pm, Sat 11am to 8pm and Sunday 11am to 7pm.

All these amenities are paid for with association dues from each homeowner.  This fee is not optional but is well worth the annual fee of $190 dollars per household.  This fee also give you access to the community center which is available for party or event rental.

A brief History of the Preserve:

The Preserve started out as prairie turned into farmland.  In the 1850’s Robert Anderson, one of the first residents of the area, homesteaded much of the Preserve area.  In 1891 some of the original homestead was sold to William Nesbitt who farmed the land for over three generations.  In 1971 Carter and Gertz Development company along with Minnegasco purchased the land and developed one of the country’s first ‘planned communities’.  This was intended to create an integrated mix of housing types from single family to townhouse to condominiums all within a walking distance of nature, shopping, and other amenities.  Part of the planned concept was that the owners would maintain and oversee these amenities and so the Preserve association was created in 1972.

Single family homes in the Preserve range in price from approximately $225,000 to homes in the $400’s.  You will find styles such as split entries, multi-levels, and two stories.  You don’t see very many one story homes but they do exist.  Most of these homes were built from 1978 to approximately 1982.
